Cuisson solaire à feu vif / Solar cooking on high heat

FINALITE DU DOCUMENT / PURPOSE OF THE DOCUMENT

Here is the description of a solar cooker, for those who wish to build one and brainstorm about use, size and shape, components and materials.

USAGE VOULU DU CUISEUR SOLAIRE / INTENDED USE OF THE SOLAR COOKER

The User assembles the cooker outdoor at a fixed location, in little time, without tools. Then he/she cooks on a flat worktop like in a kitchen, using a pan or a pot, even on high heat. Eventually the cooker is disassembled and stored indoor in compact form.

PRESENTATION / OVERVIEW

The cooker consists of a mast, a basis and a reflector:

  • The mast is anchored into the ground ; it holds the worktop, the hot box and the cooking vessel;
  • The basis rests on the ground and rotates (left/right) around the mast;
  • The reflector rests on the basis and rotates (up/down) by friction against the basis.

The User aims the cooker at the sun manually both up/down and left/right.

The sunlight hits the reflector, bounces upwards and concentrates on the cooking vessel. The heat builds up inside the hot box attached below the worktop.

CONCEPTION / DESIGN

The reflector is flexible; its shape is adjusted when first used. It is made of flat elements assembled side by side, then brought into shape by bending and pulling so to obtain an approximate half-paraboloïd. This allows achieving an accurate shape together with a lightweight structure.

The cooker features a low profile so as to limit the impact of the wind.

The worktop masks the sunlight glare; the User keeps the hands and eyes away from any open and burning spot or blinding light.

The worktop remains at constant height whatever the path of the sun, thanks to the rib shown below in gray color. This rib features a parabolic shape (blue)below the reflector and a circular shape (green) against the basis. The parabola focal point and the center of the circle makeone single point(red) which stays always at the same location.

The shape of this rib defines the achievable amplitude between high and low sun.

CONSTITUANTS /COMPONENTS

Arcs / Bows

Two half-circles shape the paraboloïd front and rear sides. The large one, made of fiberglass, acts as a bow with its tension wire a wire. The small one is made of rigid iron stub.  Adhesive “scratch” runs in a spiral around them.

This telescopic component comprises of an external tube anchored in the ground, an intermediate tube and internal one which are adjusted to reach the focal point.

To allow for quick assembly of the reflector here is an interface between reflector, bow and ribs: involving:

  • “Scratch” ribbons to maintain a defined position while resisting a shearing effort,
  • A metal insert pushed into the reflector to resist a pulling effort.

DIMENSIONNEMENT/ SIZING

Parabola: 2.4 m diameter – 0.6m focal length,  made of 36 segments, 16 of them implemented.

Energy collection across about 1.8 m2.

MATERIAUX / MATERIALS

Chromated mylar adhesive sheet.

Corrugated plastic sheet.

Adhesive ribbon with “scratch” material (velvet/hook).

Telescopic handle (used for brushing swimming pool floors).

MONTAGE / ASSEMBLY

The parabola is assembled upside down, in four parts brought against the circular side of the worktop; the bows, scratch material and inserts lock them into place. Once ribs and braces are added, the parabola is turned face up and inserted into the basis. Eventually the worktop is added.

CONSTRUCTION / MAKING

The reflector is easy to build, a cutter will do.

PREMIERE LUMIERE / FIRST LIGHT

Assembly is quite time-consuming. Then the cooker is easy to use, powerful, and sturdy in the wind.

EVALUATION / ASSESSMENT

Both requirements « storage in compact form » and « quick assembly » are not met together. If the reflector is stored in fully assembled (bulky) form, then the cooker can be installed in very little time. Many solutions  can reconcile these two merits.

ET ENSUITE ? / SO WHAT?
